At Energía Austral, we believe that it is only through adherence to clear, concrete and effective principles of care for the environment that we can achieve development that is sustainable for future generations. In our projects, we therefore seek to preserve the health, functions and long-term viability of the natural environments in which we operate.

The Aysén Region, the home of our projects, is rich in biodiversity and of great environmental value for its inhabitants and for Chile. In response, we have undertaken to work with the highest standards of care for the environment and, for example, to apply restricted regulation to our future reservoirs in order to favour the ecosystems on their banks.

In our three hydroelectric plants - Cuervo, Blanco and Cóndor - and transmission line, we have considered all the criteria relevant for minimising their impact on the environment. They, therefore, envisage the measures required to take account of their impacts and include the design of appropriate forms of mitigation, compensation and remediation.

In line with Chile’s environmental goals, Energía Austral will replace energy sources that currently represent annual emissions of 3 million tonnes of CO2, helping to reduce present contamination levels.

In accordance with studies for similar projects by the International Atomic Energy Agency, the efficiency of our project over its life cycle as regards greenhouse gas emissions is on a scale comparable to eolic and/or solar projects.
