The cultural characteristics and identity of the people of the Aysén Region have their roots in a number of families and people who, due to different historical circumstances, emigrated there and developed subsistence and productive activities, creating a life style that reflected the Region’s distance from central Chile and the rigours of its climate and topography.
As a result, the Aysén Region has today emerged as a diverse society, enriched by its variety of economic and productive activities, types of culture and life styles. The key elements that have nourished its society are the customs and characteristics introduced over the centuries by migrants from Chiloé.
Their contribution includes geographical references and place names as well as their expertise in the use of wood, navigation and the cultivation of potatoes and other vegetables.
