Primary economic activities predominate in the Aysén Region and little diversification has taken place. Aquaculture, particularly salmon farming, is one of the most developed economic sectors.
Although the Region’s geographic remoteness means that freight and passenger transport costs are high, it has great potential for the development of cattle farming, forestry, marine resources, tourism and hydroelectricity.
An abundance of natural resources, combined with the existence of the Carretera Austral (Austral Road), make regional development feasible.
